About Us

Our Beginnings

After an incident of two San Diego genealogy societies having large seminars both on the same day, Susi C. Pentico of the Chula Vista Genealogical Society and Dr. Diane McClure-Lott of the San Diego Genealogical Society discussed forming a mutual beneficial group of all San Diego County genealogy societies to share information concerning future seminar dates.

Our first meeting was held on 21 March 2012 at the "old" Lemon Grove Public Library with the working title of "Roundtable Meeting of San Diego County Genealogy Societies".  The following people were at the first meeting. Several other people couldn't make it due to location or time.

  • Gary W. Brock, CVGS President
  • Virginia Taylor, CVGS Vice President of Programs
  • Susi C. Pentico, CVGS Education Chair
  • Margaret "Marti" Lewis, SDAAGRG Vice President
  • Dr. Diane Mclure-Lott, SDGS President
  • Del Ritchhart, SDGS Program Director
  • J. Paul Hawthorne, CGSSD President
We have met every other month since then at various locations throughout San Diego County and with an ever-growing number of representatives. We considered the name "San Diego Genealogical Alliance" before settling on "San Diego Genealogical Council". Early on we also decided to include any historical and lineage societies willing to participate and any societies bordering San Diego County. As of 2015 we have 13 groups associated with us.

Our goals have continued to grow in the direction of cooperation between us. We started out by creating a calendar and sharing upcoming meetings and events to sharing our past speakers and creating a master list of local and national genealogical & historical speakers. We continue to come up with new ideas to help promote and foster genealogy in the San Diego region.
